
They were shantytowns that sprang up during the Depression. People who lost their homes or were otherwise displaced lived in them. There were even Hoovervilles in Central Park.
Last night, the BBC had a story about a modern-day Hooverville in Ontario, California. Watch it after the jump.
And George W. Bush says we're not headed for hard times. People losing their houses and winding up in a tent city. Near the airport. We are so fucked.



They should be called BushVilles

An article in the SF Gate talked about "Slumburbia" a new form of ghetto where Americans who cannot afford to live closer in to the cities are going to dwell...along with squatters, dealers, and gangs.

I was alerted to this about 1 month ago. I was actually thinking of making a documentary about this, as it happens. I'll let you know if it gets off the ground. Brilliant title for them, "shruburbs."
