A group of rich British mercenaries are being tried for attempting a coup of the oil-rich Western African nation of Equatorial Guinea. One mercenary has just been sentenced. Mark Thatcher, the son of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is believed to have funded the mercenaries. He stood to benefit greatly from the investment in the coup. Invest a little now, and then reap the rewards by becoming the CEO of a mercenary controlled country/oil company. Woohoo! It's all about the oil baby.
The Christian Coalition believes we live in a Christian nation. That is true to some extent. The majority of people in this country are Christian (Catholic, Protestant, and non-Denominational combined). Christian values are fine upstanding values. If one were to follow the true teachings of Christ then one would be required to help the poor, turn the other cheek to one's aggressors and spread love and forgiveness to one's enemies. However, the Christians of the Christian Coalition want to fight wars, give money back to the wealthy, and legislate Your personal and private life. These Christians proclaimed at the Republican National Convention that the Republican party is the party of the Lord Jesus W. Christ.
American culture is built mainly on Christian (Protestant) ideals and values. It's the Protestant ethic which propelled many to embrace hard work and sacrifice and as well expansionism and development of capitalist economy. However, this nation's government was not founded on Christian ideals. Rather it was founded to be separate from any church or religious entity. The founding fathers, especially Thomas Jefferson (see the Treaty of Tripoli which he wrote) believed this. But it's also a good idea to remember that we live in a county where our president only spoke with God for leadership advice before deciding to wage a war against the non-Christian world.
Tired of attack dog politics, fear n' smear advertising and negative campaigning? Well then, blame Karl Rove for keeping the tradition alive and stronger than ever. The mastermind of dirty trickery, Rove practices the politics of deception and propaganda. He knows how to take down opponents with vicious lies and distortions. Look at what he & Bush co. did to Sen. John McCain in the 2000 Republican primary, or what they did to Sen. Max Cleland in the 2002 midterm elections, or what they are now doing to Sen. John Kerry (the list goes on I might add).
Rove learned from the father of Republican attack dogs Lee Atwater (back in the Nixon-Reagan-Bush I days) how to go negative and play on people's fears. Rove knows how to assassinate one's character and turn a positive trait into a negative one (look how the Swift Boat Vets are trying to taint Kerry's honorable war record). There are 59 days to go until November 2. I guarantee the mudslinging will just get worse and worse.
