Friday Random Ten: Everybody's Talking 'Bout Fascism

No captions today. My head's still a bit fuzzy from the 32 oz. bottles of Regal Cerveza de El Salvador last night. All I'd say is that except for the Hot Hot Heat track which is from 2003, all these songs remind me of high school.

  1. Monkey Wrench - Foo Fighters
  2. Ride The Cliche - Stone Temple Pilots
  3. Autosuggestion - Joy Division
  4. Changes - David Bowie
  5. Dear Prudence - The Beatles
  6. Trenchtown Rock - Sublime
  7. Talk With Me, Dance With Me - Hot Hot Heat
  8. Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon
  9. Car Bomb Derby (comedy routine) - Bill Hicks
  10. The Battle of Evermore - Led Zeppelin

Other keepers of the Random Ten flame:

Roxanne gets down with Shakira and invites Jonah to play.  Tattered Coat takes the Low road.  Lauren also takes a trip back high school and Tom has a fixation on the number 99.

Friday Random Ten: Where I Unleash The Power of The Chang

You know the drill. Hit shuffle on your iPod and record the damage.

  1. Total Trash - Sonic Youth
  2. I Found A Reason - Cat Power
  3. De Camino a La Vereda - Buena Vista Social Club
  4. Pressed Rat and Warthog - Cream
  5. 19th Nervous Breakdown - The Rolling Stones
  6. Face Down - Jawbreaker
  7. Easy/Lucky/Free - Bright Eyes
  8. Growth - India.Arie
  9. Allure - DJ Danger Mouse (Beatles + Jay Z)
  10. Still In Love - The Stills

Okay. I lied. I don't have a mystical warrior friend named "Chang" like Governor Jeb Bush. Actually, the thought of Jeb Bush unleashing his little mystical warrior friend is rather frightening.

Friday Random Ten: Now With Commentary!

1. I Love My Computer - Bad Religion

Don't we all? Favorite lyric: "I am just a number and a clever screen name".

2. Getaway Car - Audioslave

A slow ballad by Chris Cornell & co. I prefer Rage to Audioslave. It's the anarchist edge I dig.

3. The Good's Gone - The Who

From The Who's first album. Power pop at its best, with cool mod haircuts!

4. Billy The Kid - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Does Tom Petty have marbles in his mouth?

5. If You C Jordan - Something Corporate

Stupid song. A whiny teenager complains about another whiny teenager singing "If you see Jordan tell him he makes me sick". It's pre-packaged corporate rock for kids, hence the name Something Corporate.

6. Morning Bell (Kid A version) - Radiohead

Now we're talking. I prefer this electronic version from Kid A as opposed to the more ambient eerie version on Amnesiac. Then again, you can't go wrong with any Radiohead album. They are all unique in their own sort of moody British way.

Fun fact about Thom Yorke, lead singer of Radiohead: Yorke was born with his left eye shut. He underwent a total of five operations. The last operation was botched and he almost lost all sight out of that eye. Now he looks as if he has a lazy eye.

7. Under My Thumb - Social Distortion

Good Stones cover. Nice and dirty sounding. If you like George W. Bush then don't tell lead singer Mike Ness or else he'll kung-fu kick you on stage.

8. People of the Sun - Rage Against The Machine

Zak, I know you like the Aztecs, but I'm afraid that the Spanish combination of Catholicism and gun powder beat the hell out of their primitive blood-lustful asses. Sorry.

9. Run Fay Fun - Isaac Hayes

An instrumental from the Kill Bill vol. 1 soundtrack.

10. Parallel Universe - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Favorite Lyric: "Christ I'm a sidewinder, I'm a California King". We are currently living in a parallel universe--it's called Bush World.

Bonus Track:

11. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

Two fun facts:  1) Dave Mason from Traffic plays acoustic guitar on this track.  2) Jimi Hendrix was not as anti-war as you may have thought. According to a new biography he was an anti-communist who feared that the Red Chinese would take over all of Asia.

  7. The New Patron Saints and Angels - AFI
  8. Midnight in a Perfect World - DJ Shadow

blue = favorite

I Shuffle Therefore I Am

Relevant History details the virtues of utilizing the shuffle feature on one's iPod. I happen to think that the shuffle feature is rigged. Why are some songs more likely to pop up than others? Is there some sort of ranking? Hmm.

And now for the music . . .

1. Diamonds and Guns - Transplants
I saw the drummer Travis Barker (who also drums for Blink-182) in South Coast Plaza once. His entire body must have been covered with tattoos.

2. Inward Singing - Tenacious D
Jack Black curses at fellow guitar-slinger KG. One interesting note about Jack Black. Mrs. Prop and I were watching the re-runs of "Golden Palace" (The Golden Girls spin-off where they work at a hotel) the other night. Jack Black had a small role in that episode as a cab driver. He must have been about 20 years old.

3. Range Life - Pavement
Stephen Malkmus has carried that Lou Reed style of singing into the 1990s with this song.

4. Cyklops - Kaly & Boudou
They are a French dub group. This track is from their album "Electric Kool Aid". I got this from some French students I met up at UC Berkeley three summers ago when I was living in the I-House.

5. Luminol - Ryan Adams
From the excellent album Rock N Roll. I like his indie-rock stuff as opposed to his country-tinged stuff.

6. The Elite - Bill Hicks
A one-minute track from a Bill Hicks comedy album. Bill has the feeling that a handful of elite cigar-smoking fat cats run the world from a small dimly lit room.

7. Amsterdam - Coldplay
Why did Chris Martin name his kid Apple? Come on, naming your kid after a fruit? WTF!?

8. They Are All in Love - The Who
Pete Townshend at his most boozed up in 1975. My favorite line is: "Goodbye you punks stay young and stay high, hand me my checkbook and I'll crawl off to die".

9. Brecon Beacons - Supergrass
I love this band. They're very T-Rexish.

10. Slumber - Bad Religion
I agree with these punks. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. That's why I seldom read fiction books.
